Matt Garrity attended William Paterson College's jazz studies program
in New Jersey and has studied with renowned performers/educators
John Riley, Rufus Reid, Harold Mabern, Carl Allen, Bill Goodwin,
and Ed Shaughnessy, among others.
A freelance jazz drummer since 1994, Matt has established himself
in the jazz community. He has performed with some of the best
in the business, including Vincent Herring, David Williams, Teri
Thornton, Ron McLure and Jerome Richardson. Matt performs
all over New York in clubs such as The Blue Note, Birdland, Smalls,
Smoke and The Up Over Jazz Cafe. He has also performed in
cabarets, concerts and festivals, including a summer jazz series
at The Baltimore Museum of Art with The Vincent Herring Quartet.
In addition to his work as a sideman, Matt leads his own group,
ACTUAL TRIO, which features Pete Smith (guitar), Dave Ambrosio (bass)
and Matt (drums). ACTUAL TRIO has been performing together
for almost eight years and has formed a strong musical bond.
The group plays a variety of original compositions as well as their
own highly creative arrangements of standard and not-so-standard
jazz repertoire. The group performs regularly in the New York
area, and has toured throughout the United States. The band
has just finished recording their debut album, ACTUAL TRIO LIVE.
Matt is also involved in education. He has worked for The
National Music Workshop, The New York Board of Education, Columbia
University's Teacher's College and The Brooklyn Conservatory of
Music. He is currently a faculty member at The Turtle Bay
Music School in Manhattan as well as Tamer’s The Jazz Assembly
which introduces jazz to young people through clinics at public
schools throughout the tri-state area. |
